In our previous mailing we informed you about the end of PROBA-V’s operational lifetime on June 30, 2020 and the continuity of end-user products. Guaranteeing the continuity of the SPOT-VEGETATION time series and bridging the gap towards Sentinel-3 data were of course the main objectives. Luckily, our brave little satellite is full of surprises. So its 7th birthday cake will come with some extra cherries on top!
While the orbital drift keeps us from delivering the same high-quality data, the radiometric and geometric performance of the satellite remains very good. It would be a waste not to use these capabilities any more. Therefore, the decision was taken to change the status of the mission from "operational" to "experimental" from July 1, 2020 until October 30, 2021.
From the continuation of Level 3 products over Europe and Africa, over moon acquisitions for multi-mission calibration purposes to even additional companion small satellites: PROBA-V has still something in store for its user community. Let me give you an overview of all the operational and experimental actions still to come in the following blog post.
