Wadden Islands, The Netherlands

In this week’s false-colour image, we zoom in on the Netherlands, famous for their conquest of the North Sea through the construction of major dike infrastructure in the southwest and the enclosure and reclaim of Flevoland as twelth province. Where Lake Ijssel, the largest lake in western Europe and formerly known as the South Sea, joins the North Sea, we find a beautiful string of islands called the Wadden Islands.
Together, the Wadden Islands stretch from the Netherlands to Denmark. Out of the Dutch islands, five are inhabited and many are protected as wildlife habitats.
Further in this image, we see the Belgian port of Antwerp and capital city of Brussels in the south, the triangle Amsterdam-The Hague – Rotterdam in the west. The Hoge Veluwe national park (brown) stands out to the southeast of Lake Ijssel as well.
